Michigan rode a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Jordan Marshall to a 17-10 victory over Oklahoma on Friday, breaking a tie in the final period to hand the Sooners their first setback in the closing minutes.
With the score knotted at 10, Marshall punched in a 1-yard touchdown run with 7:53 remaining in the fourth quarter, and Trey Butkowski added the extra point to put the Wolverines ahead for good.
Michigan built its early cushion behind quarterback Bryce Underwood, who broke free for a 38-yard touchdown run with 47 seconds left in the first quarter. Butkowski’s kick made it 7-0. The Wolverines extended the lead in the second quarter when Butkowski connected on a 40-yard field goal with 2:28 to play, sending Michigan into halftime up 10-0.
Oklahoma answered in the third quarter, closing the gap when John Mateer found Mackenzie Alleyne for a 22-yard touchdown pass with 8:30 remaining in the period. Tate Sandell’s extra point trimmed the deficit to 10-7. The Sooners drew even early in the fourth quarter on Sandell’s 34-yard field goal with 11:49 left, setting the stage for Marshall’s decisive score.
The Wolverines leaned on the ground game throughout, rushing 41 times for 152 yards. Underwood’s passing attack was limited, completing 9 of 17 throws for 111 yards without an interception. Oklahoma finished with more total yardage, 289 to Michigan’s 263, and controlled a slight edge in first downs, 17 to 14.
Turnovers proved costly for the Sooners, who lost the ball twice — one fumble and one interception — while Michigan committed none. Mateer completed 17 of 33 passes for 189 yards with an interception, and Oklahoma managed just 100 rushing yards on 29 carries.
Michigan converted 4 of 13 third-down chances and its lone fourth-down try. Oklahoma went 3 for 13 on third down and failed on its only fourth-down attempt. Penalties were an issue for both sides, with Michigan flagged 11 times for 90 yards and Oklahoma penalized nine times for 76 yards. The Wolverines held a possession advantage of 33:17 to 26:43.
With the win, Michigan improved to 1-0 and rides a one-game winning streak. Oklahoma also entered the day at 1-0, but the loss marked its first defeat.
