Roma Cruise Past Genoa with Dominant First-Half Display

Must read

AS Roma made light work of Genoa at the Stadio Olimpico, racing to a commanding three-goal lead before halftime en route to a convincing 3-1 victory on Sunday.

The Giallorossi needed just 14 minutes to break the deadlock when Matías Soulé opened the scoring, setting the tone for a dominant first-half performance. Manu Koné doubled the advantage five minutes later, and Evan Ferguson capped the opening blitz with a third goal in the 31st minute, effectively putting the match beyond Genoa’s reach before the break.

Roma controlled proceedings throughout, dominating possession with 60.6% of the ball and peppering Genoa’s goal with 16 shots, eight of which tested goalkeeper Daniele Sommariva. The Italian shot-stopper made five saves but couldn’t prevent the early onslaught.

Defensively, Polish defender Jan Ziółkowski earned the match’s highest rating at 7.9, anchoring a backline that looked comfortable throughout. Soulé matched Koné’s 7.7 rating, contributing not just his goal but also two interceptions in an all-around display. Ferguson added an assist to his goal tally while creating three key passes before being substituted five minutes from time.

Genoa showed more ambition after the interval, with manager making wholesale changes that injected fresh energy into their attack. Jeff Ekhator provided a late consolation in the 87th minute, but it proved too little, too late. Aarón Martín impressed for the visitors with three key passes and a 7.5 rating, while Sommariva’s five saves prevented further embarrassment.

The victory extends Roma’s strong form, with their clinical finishing and territorial dominance proving decisive. Despite matching Roma’s 80% pass completion rate, Genoa’s lack of cutting edge—managing just two shots on target—ultimately cost them any chance of salvaging points.
