Vancouver Whitecaps Sign Mihail Gherasimencov

Whitecaps Bring Homegrown Talent Back to BC Place

The Vancouver Whitecaps just made a move that proves patience pays off. After watching him develop on loan for a full season, the club officially signed defender Mihail Gherasimencov to a first-team contract running through 2027-28, with an option for another year tacked on.

Gherasimencov spent 2025 cutting his teeth with Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League, and the 20-year-old fullback didn’t waste the opportunity. He put up six goal contributions—two goals and four assists—across 30 matches in all competitions. Not bad for a guy still getting his first real taste of professional soccer.

From Academy Prospect to First-Team Reality

Before heading to Calgary, Gherasimencov was a menace in MLS NEXT Pro with Whitecaps FC 2. Over three seasons, he racked up 11 goal contributions in 49 appearances. Those numbers caught eyes, but the club wanted him to get seasoned in a higher-pressure environment. The loan worked.

Whitecaps sporting director Axel Schuster didn’t hide his excitement about the signing.

“Since joining our program, Mihail has progressed through every level, from our academy to our second team, and most recently on loan with Cavalry last season. We’re excited to see Mihail take this next step and look forward to supporting his continued growth in our first-team environment.”

Gherasimencov joined the Whitecaps Academy back in August 2020 and earned a spot in the inaugural MLS NEXT All-Star Game two years later. The Moldovan international has also represented his country three times, including appearances in FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

What This Means for Vancouver

Vancouver’s adding depth at fullback with a player who’s already proven he can contribute in the attacking third. Gherasimencov’s versatility and work rate should make him a valuable asset whether he’s starting or coming off the bench.

For the player himself, it’s a full-circle moment. He expressed gratitude for everyone who helped him along the way—family, teammates, coaches in both Vancouver and Calgary—and made it clear he’s ready to give everything for the Whitecaps.

Now comes the real test: showing he belongs at the MLS level week in and week out. If his development curve continues, Vancouver could have a legitimate contributor on their hands for years to come.
