Inter Miami Lock Down Elite Left Back to Replace Club Legend
Inter Miami just pulled off one of the sneakiest moves of the offseason. The reigning MLS Cup champions officially announced Monday they’ve signed Sergio Reguilón, the 28-year-old Spanish international who’s been tearing up the Premier League for years.
Reguilón arrives as a free agent after his stint with Tottenham Hotspur, and Miami wasted zero time locking him down through December 2027 with a club option for 2028. Smart business when you consider what just walked out the door.
Miami needed this. They had to replace Jordi Alba, the legendary defender who hung up his boots after helping deliver the club’s first MLS Cup title. Alba was irreplaceable in terms of legacy, but Reguilón brings something different—youth, pace, and hunger.
A Resume That Speaks for Itself
This isn’t some developmental project. Reguilón has logged over 260 professional matches across some of Europe’s biggest stages. Real Madrid. Sevilla. Atlético Madrid. Manchester United. Brentford. The guy’s been everywhere.
His trophy case isn’t empty either. He lifted the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 and grabbed a FIFA Club World Cup medal with Real Madrid back in 2018. He’s also earned six caps for Spain, including appearances during their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
Reguilón knows what winning looks like, and Miami is betting he can help them stack more hardware.
“It’s a very ambitious project, a winning club that is doing things the right way, and that’s what attracted me: coming here to keep winning and competing. My objective is to keep winning, go after the trophies we’re missing, and win everything here.”
What This Means for Miami’s Championship Defense
Miami isn’t messing around. They just won it all and immediately went out and upgraded at a position of need. That’s championship mentality.
Reguilón gives them a versatile, attack-minded fullback who can bomb forward and track back with equal effectiveness. He’s played at the highest level in England and Spain, so the MLS learning curve should be minimal.
The Herons are loading up for another title run, and adding a player of Reguilón’s caliber shows they’re not satisfied with just one trophy. They want to build a dynasty, and moves like this are how you do it.
Welcome to Miami, Sergio. Now go help them run it back.
