Earlier this season, Oklahoma State let go of long time head coach Mike Gundy after 20 years. The search for a new coach was never going to be easy. But the search is over. Oklahoma State have officially hired North Texas head coach Eric Morris.
The Morris Resume
Morris built his credentials the hard way. Four seasons at North Texas, posting a 32-20 record while transforming a program that was collecting participation trophies in Conference USA.
His Mean Green went 31-14 over the last three seasons. That’s not Oregon money, but it’s real progress in a league where consistency is rarer than a clean NIL deal.
The offensive coordinator pedigree matters here. Morris spent time at Texas Tech under Kliff Kingsbury, learning the Air Raid system that Oklahoma State fans remember fondly from the Gundy glory days.
Why This Makes Sense
Oklahoma State needed someone who understands the Big 12 landscape without breaking the bank. Morris checks both boxes.
The Cowboys are staring down conference realignment chaos and NIL budget constraints. They needed a coach who could develop talent, not just recruit five-stars to Stillwater.
Morris proved he can win with less at North Texas. His teams averaged 34.2 points per game this season while playing disciplined football – exactly what Oklahoma State’s administration wanted to see.
What’s Next
Morris inherits a program with decent bones but significant questions at quarterback and along the offensive line. The transfer portal opens wide for Oklahoma State players, and Morris will need to move fast to keep key contributors.
Early betting lines have Oklahoma State as a longshot for Big 12 contention in 2025. Morris has about eight months to prove those oddsmakers wrong.
