Fernández Double Powers NYCFC Past Rapids in Clinical Display

Must read

Nicolás Fernández delivered when it mattered most, netting a decisive brace as New York City FC dispatched the Colorado Rapids 3-1 at home on Sunday, proving that efficiency trumps possession in Major League Soccer.

Despite controlling just 40.7% of the ball, NYCFC made their opportunities count with ruthless precision. The hosts registered 13 shots with eight on target, overwhelming Rapids goalkeeper Nicholas Defreitas-Hansen, who made five saves but couldn’t prevent the defeat.

Fernández opened the scoring in the 22nd minute and struck again on the stroke of halftime to give NYCFC a commanding 2-0 advantage. The Argentine forward’s clinical finishing earned him an 8.9 match rating, the highest on the pitch. Maxi Moralez orchestrated the attack with an assist and two key passes, pulling the strings in midfield.

Colorado briefly threatened a comeback when Darren Yapi converted from Rafael Navarro’s assist in first-half stoppage time, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The Rapids dominated possession at 59.3% and completed passes at an impressive 90% clip, but lacked the cutting edge when it mattered.

The match grew chippy as both sides accumulated yellow cards, with four players booked before halftime. Rapids midfielder H. Ojediran saw yellow in the eighth minute, setting a physical tone that continued throughout.

Colorado manager made wholesale changes, introducing five substitutes in search of an equalizer, but NYCFC’s defense stood firm. Kai Trewin anchored the backline with five interceptions and two key passes, earning a 7.5 rating.

Talles Magno sealed the victory in the 86th minute, finishing emphatically to restore the two-goal cushion and secure all three points for the hosts. The result showcased NYCFC’s counter-attacking prowess and their ability to punish opponents on the break.
