Red Bull New York just made a serious statement. The club announced Monday they’ve locked down Mexican winger Jorge Ruvalcaba from Pumas UNAM, inking him through the 2029-30 season with an option for another year.
A Young Gun With International Pedigree
Ruvalcaba, just 24 years old, brings some serious firepower to Harrison. The kid grew up in the States before developing through Pumas’ academy system, where he put together a solid resume: 16 goals and 9 assists across 100 appearances since breaking through in 2022.
He’s not just tearing it up at club level, either. Ruvalcaba earned his first senior cap with Mexico last November, getting the start against Paraguay. That’s the kind of upward trajectory that gets MLS front offices excited.
The Roster Chess Move
Here’s where it gets interesting. Ruvalcaba slides into New York’s third Designated Player slot for 2026, but there’s flexibility built in. Down the road, he could shift to a Targeted Allocation Money deal, which gives the Red Bulls serious roster maneuverability.
“We are very excited to welcome Jorge to our club,” said head of sport Julian de Guzman. “He is a dynamic, creative attacker who has shown great potential and a strong work ethic, and we are confident that he will contribute to our success both on and off the field.”
A Stacked Attack Takes Shape
New York’s offensive unit is starting to look downright scary. Ruvalcaba joins an attack featuring fellow LIGA MX import Cade Cowell, who arrived from Chivas in December. Then you’ve got DP striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and midfielder Emil Forsberg, who combined for 28 goals and 16 assists last season.
Head coach Michael Bradley isn’t hiding his excitement about the versatility Ruvalcaba brings. “His versatility and pace will give us additional options in the attacking third,” Bradley said. “We are looking forward to working with him as he looks to integrate and contribute to the success of the team.”
The Red Bulls kick off Bradley’s first campaign on February 21 when they travel to Orlando City. With the pieces they’ve assembled this offseason, expectations in New York just jumped through the roof.
