Must read

Vancouver Whitecaps FC demolished rivals Portland Timbers 4-1 at Providence Park on Saturday, March 7, tying Toronto FC’s all-time MLS regular season wins record for a Canadian club with their 183rd victory.

Brian White led the assault with a brace in the 21st and 87th minutes, moving him to 98 career goal contributions for the Whitecaps. Tristan Blackmon extended Vancouver’s lead early in the second half with a 49th-minute strike, before Sebastian Berhalter added a fourth in the 63rd minute to put the match out of reach.

The commanding performance saw Vancouver maintain a dominant defensive start to the season, setting a new club MLS-era record with 432 consecutive shutout minutes to open the campaign before Eric Izoita finally broke through in the 72nd minute for Portland’s lone goal.

The match also marked a milestone for Mihail Gherasimencov, who made his MLS debut for the Whitecaps during the contest.

Vancouver will look to carry the momentum into Concacaf Champions Cup competition when they host Seattle Sounders FC on March 12.
