Wagner Heads Across the Pond After Seven Stellar Seasons
One of MLS’s most reliable left backs is packing his bags for England. After seven seasons anchoring the Philadelphia Union’s defense, Kai Wagner is heading to Birmingham City in the EFL Championship, the club confirmed Friday.
This isn’t some rookie looking for a shot overseas. Wagner leaves Philadelphia as a decorated veteran who racked up three MLS All-Star selections and two MLS Best XI honors—including one just last season. His final stat line in Union blue? A ridiculous 10 goals and 54 assists across 253 matches in all competitions.
More Than Just Numbers on the Stat Sheet
Wagner wasn’t just collecting individual accolades while his team struggled. The 28-year-old German was instrumental in Philadelphia winning Supporters’ Shields in both 2020 and 2025, solidifying his legacy as one of the franchise’s all-time greats.
Head coach Bradley Carnell didn’t hold back in his praise for the departing defender. He highlighted Wagner’s “consistent dedication and hard work” along with his leadership qualities that extended beyond what happened on the field. But Carnell also made it clear this move is about respecting Wagner’s wishes to test himself in Europe—a decision the club fully supports for both the player and his family.
Union Face Defensive Exodus
Wagner’s departure is just the latest blow to Philadelphia’s roster this winter. Center back Jakob Glesnes already got shipped to LA Galaxy, while striker Tai Baribo landed with D.C. United via trade. To make matters worse, forward Mikael Uhre is now a free agent.
That’s a lot of talent walking out the door for a team that just won the Supporters’ Shield. The Union’s front office has serious work ahead to rebuild before their 2026 season kicks off February 21—ironically, against D.C. United, where they’ll face their former striker Baribo right out of the gate.
For Wagner, it’s a well-earned opportunity to prove himself at a higher level after dominating MLS for years. For Philadelphia? It’s time to figure out who’s going to lock down that left side of the defense.
