Orlando City Send Rodrigo Schlegel to Atlas in LIga MX

Must read

Another Orlando City Stalwart Heads South of the Border

Orlando City’s defensive backbone just got a whole lot thinner. The Lions confirmed Tuesday they’ve shipped center back Rodrigo Schlegel to Liga MX side Atlas, ending a six-year chapter that saw the Argentine become one of the club’s most reliable defenders.

Schlegel arrived in Florida back in 2020 from Racing Club and quickly became a fixture in the heart of Orlando’s defense. Over 180 appearances across all competitions, the 28-year-old helped anchor a backline that reached the playoffs six consecutive seasons and hoisted the club’s first major trophy—the 2022 US Open Cup.

That Cup run alone cemented his legacy. Schlegel was instrumental in Orlando’s historic 3-0 victory over Sacramento Republic, delivering when it mattered most. Four goals over his MLS career might not jump off the stat sheet, but his presence and consistency were irreplaceable on matchday.

Lions Losing Key Veterans in Quick Succession

This transfer represents the third major departure for Orlando this winter, following the exits of goalkeeper Pedro Gallese and midfielder César Araújo, both of whom are out of contract. Losing three core players in one offseason is a brutal reality check for a club trying to build on playoff momentum.

General manager Ricardo Moreira didn’t hold back in his praise for the outgoing defender, calling Schlegel’s impact “incredible” and thanking him for everything from that first playoff victory to his leadership in the locker room.

“Rodrigo has been an incredible part of our history. His commitment, passion and leadership have left a lasting mark on this club.”

Schlegel now joins an Atlas squad that finished 14th in the Liga MX Apertura—a team desperate for defensive reinforcements. For Orlando City fans, watching him walk out the door stings, especially considering the stability he brought during some of the franchise’s best years.

What’s Next for the Lions?

Orlando now faces the unenviable task of replacing three key contributors while maintaining their playoff standard. The front office has work to do, and the clock is ticking. With Gallese, Araújo, and now Schlegel all gone, the Lions are staring down a significant roster overhaul.

For Schlegel, it’s a fresh start in one of North America’s most competitive leagues. For Orlando? It’s time to rebuild—and fast.
