Ole Miss Upsets Georgia To Win Sugar Bowl Quarterfinal

Must read

We probably witnessed one of the wildest endings in College Football Playoff history.

Ole Miss kicker Lucas Carneiro drilled a 47-yard field goal with six seconds remaining, then the Rebels sealed a stunning 39-34 victory over Georgia with a safety on the final play as the Bulldogs’ desperation lateral attempt backfired in the Sugar Bowl quarterfinal.

The finish was pure chaos. Georgia’s Peyton Woodring had tied the game at 34-34 with a 24-yard field goal with 56 seconds left, seemingly forcing overtime. But Trinidad Chambliss had other plans, completing crucial passes to De’Zhaun Stribling and Harrison Wallace III to set up Carneiro’s game-winner.

Chambliss was magnificent, completing 30-of-46 passes for 362 yards and two touchdowns with a 90.6 QBR. Wallace hauled in nine catches for 156 yards and a score, while Stribling added seven receptions for 122 yards. Kewan Lacy powered the ground game with 98 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.

Georgia fought valiantly behind quarterback Gunner Stockton, who accounted for three touchdowns (two rushing, one passing). Zachariah Branch caught eight passes for 67 yards and a touchdown, while Nate Frazier rushed for 86 yards. The Bulldogs also got a 47-yard fumble return touchdown from Daylen Everette in the second quarter.

Ole Miss controlled possession for just 27:28 but made it count, racking up 473 total yards. The Rebels’ defense generated nine tackles for loss and two sacks, suffocating Georgia’s offense when it mattered most.
