Mike Maignan produced a goalkeeping masterclass with six crucial saves, but AC Milan had to settle for a 1-1 draw with AS Roma at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday, as Lorenzo Pellegrini’s 74th-minute penalty cancelled out Koni De Winter’s earlier strike.
The French goalkeeper stood tall against relentless Roma pressure, as the Giallorossi dominated possession (57.9%) and peppered Milan’s goal with 15 shots, seven on target. Maignan’s defiance kept his side level through a first half that saw Roma control proceedings without finding the breakthrough.
Milan struck against the run of play in the 62nd minute when defender De Winter powered home, with veteran playmaker Luka Modrić registering the assist. The 40-year-old Croatian turned back the clock with an influential performance, earning a 7.9 rating alongside his creative contribution and two interceptions.
However, the lead lasted just 12 minutes. After Maignan received a yellow card in the 74th minute, Pellegrini stepped up to convert from the spot, sending the Roma captain’s penalty past the outstanding keeper to level the scores. The Italian midfielder capped a solid all-around display with his goal and two interceptions.
Bryan Cristante orchestrated Roma’s attacks with a match-high 7.9 rating, while Paulo Dybala created four key passes in a lively performance before his 69th-minute substitution. For Milan, the physical battle took its toll as yellow cards piled up for Rabiot, Athekame, Modrić, and Maignan.
Despite controlling just 42.1% of possession and managing only five shots, Milan’s defensive resilience—anchored by Maignan’s brilliance—secured a valuable point on the road. Roma will rue their profligacy in front of goal, converting just once despite their territorial dominance.
