Bayer Leverkusen pulled off an impressive upset at the Etihad Stadium, defeating Manchester City 2-0 in a commanding European performance under manager Kasper Hjulmand.
Despite City’s early pressure, with Nathan Ake testing goalkeeper Mark Flekken within the opening five minutes, Leverkusen weathered the storm and struck against the run of play in the 23rd minute. Alejandro Grimaldo finished expertly into the bottom corner after Christian Kofane cleverly knocked down Quansah’s cross from the right.
Pep Guardiola’s side controlled possession throughout but struggled to break down the organized German defense. Flekken was kept busy before halftime, using both foot and body to deny Oscar Bobb and Tijjani Reijnders.
Guardiola introduced Phil Foden, Jeremy Doku, and Nico O’Reilly at halftime seeking a response, but Leverkusen doubled their advantage instead. Grimaldo turned provider this time, combining with Ibrahim Maza whose precise delivery found Patrik Schick for a powerful header.
City brought on Erling Haaland for Omar Marmoush with 25 minutes remaining, and the Norwegian immediately forced a excellent save from Flekken before blazing over. Late pressure from Rayan Cherki’s free-kick tested the Dutch keeper again, but Leverkusen held firm to secure a vital three points for their European campaign
