Galaxy Land Elite Defender in Major Eastern Conference Raid
The 2024 MLS Cup champions just got a whole lot scarier on the back line. In one of the more aggressive moves of the winter, LA pulled off a blockbuster deal to bring in the Norwegian international from the East Coast powerhouse. This isn’t some depth piece – Glesnes is the real deal, a centerback who’s been anchoring one of the league’s stingiest defenses for years.
The Union are shipping out $2.2 million in General Allocation Money for the 31-year-old defensive stalwart. Half of that – $1.1 million – is guaranteed, split between $500k in 2026 and $600k in 2027. The other half comes in conditional payments, meaning Philadelphia could squeeze even more value out of this deal depending on how things shake out in LA.
Why This Move Makes Perfect Sense for LA
Let’s be real: the Galaxy had some serious issues at the back last season. They conceded 66 goals in 2025, tied for the second-worst mark in MLS. For a team with championship aspirations, that’s a problem. You can’t win trophies when you’re hemorrhaging goals like that.
Enter Glesnes, who spent six seasons terrorizing opposing forwards in Philadelphia. The big Norwegian racked up 10 goals and 8 assists across 224 appearances in all competitions since arriving from Strømsgodset in 2020. But his resume goes way beyond the stat sheet.
We’re talking about the 2022 MLS Defender of the Year. A guy who made the MLS Best XI. A three-time All-Star. Someone who helped Philadelphia win two Supporters’ Shields, including last season when they allowed a league-low 35 goals. That’s the kind of defensive backbone LA desperately needed.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jakob and his family to Los Angeles,” Galaxy GM Will Kuntz said. “In his six years in MLS, Jakob has established himself as one of the best center backs in the league and a back-line leader on multiple Supporters’ Shield-winning teams.”
Philadelphia Cashes In and Looks Ahead
For the Union, this is about asset management and roster evolution. They’re not waving the white flag – they’re getting paid handsomely for a 31-year-old defender and betting on the future. Olwethu Makhanya, who cracked the 2025 22 Under 22 Rankings at No. 13, steps into a bigger role now as their top returning centerback.
Plus, Philadelphia snagged the homegrown priority rights for Jamir Johnson, a promising academy forward who represented the US at the 2025 FIFA U-17 World Cup. They also kept a percentage of any future trade or transfer involving Johnson. Smart business.
“Jakob has been an integral part of our defensive unit and the success they have had during his time with the club,” Union head coach Bradley Carnell noted. “This move provides significant financial opportunities to continue to invest and strengthen our roster while reinforcing our competitive strategy.”
The Galaxy finished a disappointing 14th in the West last year with just 30 points, but they did punch their ticket to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup through their Leagues Cup run. Now they’ve got a proven winner to help turn things around. Glesnes arrives in January ready to shore up that leaky defense and bring some championship DNA to Carson.
