Austin FC just bolstered their backline with some serious depth. The Verde and Black announced Tuesday they’ve locked down defender Jon Bell through a free agency deal that runs through June 2028, with a club option for the 2028-29 season.
Bell brings legitimate MLS experience to Q2 Stadium. Over five seasons bouncing between New England, St. Louis, and most recently Seattle, the versatile defender has logged 76 appearances across all competitions while chipping in three goals and two assists. That’s the kind of production from the back that makes coaches sleep better at night.
Versatility That Fits the System
Sporting director Rodolfo Borrell didn’t mince words about what attracted Austin to Bell. The defender’s ability to slot into multiple positions across the defensive line makes him the Swiss Army knife every squad needs heading into a grueling MLS campaign.
“Jon is a versatile defender who is familiar with MLS and capable of playing in different positions on the backline. He is a good addition to our defensive group and we welcome him to Austin.”
Bell also carries international pedigree, having earned two caps with Jamaica, including a showing at the 2024 Copa América. That tournament experience against elite competition only adds to his value.

This signing comes as Austin looks to build on their 2025 playoff appearance under first-year head coach Nico Estévez. Sure, they bowed out in Round One against LAFC, but making the postseason in Year One of a new regime is nothing to sneeze at.
Bell himself is already locked in on the opportunity ahead. The defender expressed excitement about finally experiencing the infamous Q2 Stadium atmosphere from the home side rather than as a visitor who’s getting absolutely torched by 20,000 screaming fans in the Texas heat.
